Hamilton only seventh

What happened to the pace of Russell's teammate Hamilton? He ends up down in seventh after others improve.

Norris and Piastri take third and fourth with Ricciardo an impressive fifth.

Alonso nips in ahead of Hamilton to snatch sixth, with Tsunoda, Stroll and Albon completing the top-10.

Russell on pole ahead of Verstappen

Unbelievable! Russell has beaten to Verstappen to pole in Canada but they have posted identical lap times so Russell takes pole due to setting the lap first! Incredible

Will Russell hold onto pole?

Can Russell hold onto what would be just his second F1 pole? Or can somebody - perhaps Mercedes teammate Hamilton - challenge him?

Final runs of Q3 are starting now.

Russell on provisional pole

It's Russell once again setting the pace in Q3. He goes fastest on a 1m12.000s which is slower than his best lap in Q2.

Hamilton slots into second, 0.280s behind. Verstappen is another tenth adrift in third.

Piastri sits fourth ahead of the Aston Martin duo of Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll.

Who will claim pole in Q3?

The top-10 shootout is underway as the threat of rain continues to linger in the air.

Who will claim pole position in Canada? It's time to find out.

Both Ferraris out in Q2!

A shocker for Ferrari as both Leclerc and Sainz drop out of qualifying with times only good enough for 11th and 12th.

Also out are Sargeant, Magnussen and Gasly.

Russell leads a Mercedes 1-2 ahead of Hamilton in Q2.

Russell nearly hits the wall

Russell has a big slide through the exit of Turn 4 but manages to keep his Mercedes out of the wall.

Verstappen improves but only ninth

Verstappen does manage to find improvement on his next lap, but it's only good enoiugh for ninth.

He is then bumped down to 10th by Sainz...

Russell fastest after first runs

Russell leads the way from Piastri and Mercedes teammate Hamilton in the early stages of Q2.

Verstappen is down in 11th but there's still plenty of time to get more laps in, providing the rain holds off...

Q2 is underway

Green light and Q2 is go. Another big queue at the end of the pitlane with drivers keen to make the most of the dry track conditions.

Fans are scrambling to get their raincoats and ponchos on. Is rain on the way?

Perez out of qualifying!

Perez has been eliminated in Q1 for the second race running.

It's a disaster for the Red Bull driver, who is knocked out in 16th.

Bottas, Ocon, Hulkenberg and Zhou are also out of qualifying.

Verstappen ended up fastest with an improvement right at the end.

Hamilton now shoots to the top

Hamilton now goes fastest as the track continues to grip up.

Norris is second and Russell third.

Verstappen is only 10th at the moment.

Perez in the danger zone

The drivers currently in the drop zone are Piastri, Perez, Gasly, Ocon and Zhou.

There's still time for anothe run - and the rain is holding off for the time being.

Verstappen fastest

Times changing all the time as drivers hurry to get quick laps in on soft tyres before the expected rain comes.

Verstappen currently tops the timesheets, ahead of Norris and Stroll.

Q1 is go as dark clouds circle

Q1 gets underway and the weather has changed dramatically. It is not raining yet, but some threatening dark clouds are lingering around the vicinity of the circuit.

Q1 is just around the corner

We are 15 minutes away from the start of qualifying.

It remains dry at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. Will it stay that way throughout the session?

Qualifying up next

Will it stay dry? And can Mercedes really challenge for pole position? We will find out later this evening at 9pm.

Hamilton lays down FP3 marker

The chequered flag is out and that's FP3 finished, with Hamilton's brilliant lap keeping him on top.

Verstappen did manage to improve again late on, but could only get within 0.374s of Hamilton's effort.

Russell is third, four tenths slower than his teammate, with Stroll and Piastri completing the top five.

Verstappen up to second

Despite his complaints, Verstappen improves to go second. He is still some six tenths adrift of pacesetter Hamilton.

Verstappen unhappy with car

"The car is jumping up and down a lot. Especially braking into turn one. Also turn three and four."

Hamilton with a huge lap

After briefly being dislodged by Mercedes teammate Russell, Hamilton returns to the top of the order with a huge lap.

He sets a 1m12.549s to go SEVEN TENTHS clear of Russell.

Verstappen, meanwhile, goes third, before being pipped by Ricciardo.

Time for one more soft tyre run

Just over 10 minutes left of FP3 and there's time for a final flurry of soft tyre laps.

Time to see where everyone is going into qualifying later...
