The board at the Japanese giant is understood to be meeting later this week to discuss granting a budget worth ?125million for the project, based on a figure supplied by Honda's R&D department. A final decision is not thought to be likely before May, and the possibility remains that Honda will look to buy into an existing team. Jordan currently utilises a form of the Japanese company's V10 - badged by Mugen - and would be the most likely target.


With the FIA putting a restriction on the number of teams it wishes to see in F1 from next season, Honda's decision could hold the key for other GP aspirants, such as Toyota, who are also making noises about joining the series.
