For new fans or those who need a touch up in knowledge, here’s a quick reminder of the IndyCar qualifying format for road and street courses:
IndyCar qualifying is split into three knockout rounds with the first round splitting the field into two groups for two different ten minute sessions.
The top six from each group advance to the second round.
In the same way as the first knockout round, the top six drivers in this session advance into the Fast 6.
The top six drivers will return to track in the Fast Six to battle for pole position.
Easy enough.
Kyle Kirkwood worked to keep the pressure on Palou to remind him that he’s not going to let him walk to the championship win and topped the session with a lap time of 1:58272.
The only other driver to win a race this year beside the dominant Palou, the American driver is running a special Honda tribute livery in honour of the Japanese engine manufacturer whose Marysville Auto Plant is under an hour away from this weekend’s track.
McLaren drove his No.5 McLaren to second with a lap time of 1:06.0160 while Palou remained ominous in third with a 1:06.0409. The Spanish driver is looking for this seventh win this season which included his first Indy 500 win.
David Maluka, who has so far had an impressive season, found himself in the wall at turn four in his No.4 A.J. Foyt car. However, he wasn’t the only driver to struggle with Colton Herta in his No.26 Gainbridge Honda also in the tire barrier at turn six.
2022 Mid-Ohio winner, Scott McLaughlin spun into the gravel but managed to continue while Felix Rosenqvist was told to stop on track due to a mechanical problem.
A disappointing end to the session for the Swede, it didn’t stop his car’s special livery wow fans. Running a Creed special livery at the indy 500, Rosenqvist’s livery for this weekend honours Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath in a striking black and purple livery.
