John McGuinness has announced he’s suffered a setback in his injury recovery which could impact his return to racing in 2018.

The 23-time Isle of Man TT winner sustained a badly broken leg in a crash during practice at the North West 200 and has been focusing on a full recovery for a comeback this year.

Last month, McGuinness was able to remove his external fixator from his lower leg and walked unaided for the first time at the Isle of Man TT launch.

McGuinness is gearing up for a full return to racing this year having signed for Norton at the TT while also striking a deal with Michael Dunlop to ride his prepared Honda in the Supersport class plus a Kawasaki Supertwin for Ryan Farquhar’s KMR team.

But his comeback could be delayed after McGuinness confirmed on Twitter that has been hit by a delay in his recovery.

“Not sure what to say, unfortunately my leg has had a bit of setback,” McGuinness wrote on Twitter. “Sorry not said sooner. I’ve just been trying to get my head around it all first! To say I’m gutted is an understatement.”

It is not yet know how the setback will impact McGuinness’s planned recovery timetable.
