Bathurst prepared for pit complex opening.

The giants of V8 Supercar racing will join State and Federal leaders and Council representatives at the official opening of the anticipated Stage 1 pit complex at Mount Panorama next Wednesday.

The finishing touches are being made to the state-of-the-art new complex with less than 2 weeks until the new venue faces the ultimate test as the backdrop to the Bob Jane T-Marts Bathurst 1000.

The $24 million dollar redevelopment, funded jointly by the State and Commonwealth Governments and additional Council funds enables the Mount Panorama precinct to become a world class venue and an outstanding asset for regional Australia.

The opening will commence at 10.30 am and will include a pit lane press conference with leading V8 Supercar drivers including the 2003 Bathurst 1000 winners Greg Murphy and Rick Kelly who will unveil the new-look Kmart Commodore they will use in the defence of their crown.

Around 120 construction workers a day have been working on the site since December 2003 to get the project ready for this year's big event.

Council Administrator Kath Knowles said participants and race fans alike will be overwhelmed by the new development.

"The completed first stage of the Mt Panorama Tourism and Recreational Development provides a unique and awe-inspiring backdrop to the special event that is the Bob Jane T-Marts Bathurst 1000," she said, "while setting the stage for exciting future improvements to one of the most significant tourist attractions in regional Australia.

"The change to the image of the legendary circuit this year is indeed dramatic and will be welcomed by all who make the annual pilgrimage to Mount Panorama."
