Kimi Antonelli owns up to mistakes amid Zandvoort “wake-up call” at F1 Dutch GP

Formula 1 championship leader Andrea Kimi Antonelli has described the Dutch Grand Prix weekend as being a “good wake-up call” after a mistake-ridden start. 

After dominating much of the 2026 season with six wins from the opening 11 races, Antonelli has been on the back foot compared to Mercedes team-mate George Russell so far at Zandvoort. 

Russell converted pole position into a morale-boosting sprint race victory to reduce Antonelli’s championship advantage down to 56 points, before outpacing the Italian teenager by 0.031 seconds in regular qualifying as the Mercedes pair took second and third behind McLaren’s Lando Norris. 

Antonelli struggled with the balance of his Mercedes and was left to rue a scrappy first sector for missing out on a potential pole as raindrops fell during the final runs of Q3. 

“Just struggling with the balance, to be fair, throughout the whole session. Mainly Sector 3, was struggling in the chicane. And then just made a couple of changes and the feeling came back,” Antonelli said. 

“But obviously, in the last lap I did a mistake in Sector 1. Took it a bit too easy seeing the rain on the visor and just, yeah, was a really poor Sector 1. Shame because I think we had a shot for pole, but still starting P3 tomorrow and all to play for.” 

Antonelli, who is considered the overwhelming favourite to win a maiden world championship after his convincing and remarkably consistent performances this year, insisted he is not starting to feel extra pressure. 

“I don’t feel any extra pressure,” the 19-year-old said. “But it was a very good wake-up call this weekend, that you can never lower your guard because when you do that… I did a mistake yesterday and today I did a mistake in Q3. 

“So, it’s not that I’m driving more tense or anything, but I just feel this weekend is a good wake-up call, and to just again put things in the right place at the right time and just deliver the result when it counts.”
