George Russell boosts F1 title outlook with Dutch GP sprint win
George Russell took a lights-to-flag victory in the Dutch Grand Prix sprint race.

George Russell claimed a convincing victory in the Dutch Grand Prix sprint race to claw back some important points in his Formula 1 world championship bid.
The 28-year-old Briton, who entered the weekend 59 points behind Mercedes team-mate and F1 championship leader Andrea Kimi Antonelli, had to absorb early pressure from McLaren’s Lando Norris before pulling clear.
Having successfully resisted the reigning world champion in the opening laps, Russell went on to convert his pole position from Friday into his third sprint win of the 2026 season.
Russell, who is the only repeat sprint winner this year, remains third in the world championship but has closed to within three points of second-placed Lewis Hamilton, and is now 56 behind Antonelli.

Charles Leclerc, with soft tyres fitted to his Ferrari, pulled off the only overtake out of the frontrunners when he dived down the inside of Norris with a brilliant move into Turn 1 on lap 18 to snatch second.
Norris faded in the closing stages but just managed to hold off Antonelli, who had to settle with fourth place, having jumped McLaren’s Oscar Piastri at the start.
Home hero Max Verstappen was close behind as he took sixth, ahead of his great F1 rival Lewis Hamilton, who was left a frustrated seventh after the seven-time world champion’s sprint qualifying disappointment on Friday.
Pierre Gasly sealed the final point on offer for Alpine in eighth, ahead of Audi’s Gabriel Bortoleto and Arvid Lindblad, who rounded out the top-10 in his Racing Bulls.
Heavy rain started to fall on the final lap as the field took the chequered flag.
Nico Hulkenberg was the only driver who failed to finish after experiencing a power issue in his Audi.
