Formula 1 fans heading to the Dutch Grand Prix have faced travel chaos while trying to get to Zandvoort on Saturday morning.

Local media reports that train cancellations and delays at various stations, including the main Amsterdam Centraal hub, have led to huge queues and wait times.

Travelling by train is the easiest way to reach the F1 circuit in the seaside holiday town of Zandvoort, which is located around 40km away from Amsterdam.

The Dutch Railways put on extra, regular trains to accommodate the thousands of fans descending on the race, with train travel widely encouraged over driving. The journey typically lasts less than 30 minutes.

Fans are warned to start their journeys early, particularly on weekend days, due to how busy the services get, and to avoid facing huge waits in queues outside stations.

While the race is typically busy, things appear to have gone up a level for the final Dutch Grand Prix before Zandvoort drops off the F1 calendar.

The situation has not been helped by delays and cancellations of services, which has only added to the backlog of people.

Photos shared by fans from Amsterdam Centraal have revealed extremely long queues of people waiting for trains.

Some have reported queue wait times of over 1.5 hours, meaning hundreds and potentially thousands of fans will end up missing some of Saturday’s action.

The 24-lap sprint race takes place at 11am UK time, before qualifying for Sunday’s grand prix gets underway at 3pm.

Home hero Max Verstappen starts sixth on the grid for the sprint.
