Mercedes Formula 1 driver George Russell joked about his recent proposal to Carmen Montero Mundt after taking pole position for the sprint race at the Dutch Grand Prix.

Russell, who trails his team-mate Andrea Kimi Antonelli by 59 points in the world championship, bounced back from a tough first half of the season by snatching his first pole in four races at Zandvoort.

The 28-year-old Briton pipped McLaren’s Lando Norris by just 0.041 seconds in a highly-competitive sprint qualifying session on Friday, with Mercedes stable-mate Antonelli only fifth.

Russell, who announced his engagement to his long-term partner during the F1 summer break, quipped over the radio to his Mercedes team: "Nice one! Must be a bit lighter after that engagement ring!”

"It has been a tough end to the first part of the year so I am really happy to be back,” he added in parc ferme after getting out of his W17.

"The lap felt really good. It is always difficult in sprint qualifying because we have just a lap to put it together, but it all came together nicely.

"It has been a little while since I was top of the timesheets in any session. I can't even remember the last time. It was good to remind myself I can still drive and the break came at a good point.

"But it's still just the sprint and the main qualifying will be the key one. McLaren look really fast. Ferrari look quick. It has been a surprise to us as a team the last couple of races but we are in a good spot.

"I came into this weekend with a real open mind because I had no idea how it was doing to go.

"Confidence level wasn't exactly at my highest but just trying to remember the feeling I need from myself and the car and try to treat it like the first race of the season and not overthink things.”

Is the pressure off Russell’s shoulders?

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff also made a light-hearted reference to Russell’s recent personal news.

"George is coming back. I think he feels so much pressure is off his shoulders after she [Carmen Montero Mundt] accepted his marriage proposal!” Wolff told Sky Sports F1.

"Some solid work on the day to day, he put the dots together and had a very good lap.”

In Thursday’s drivers’ press conference, Russell shared details of his summer break proposal.

"It was very special, and it was a really, really nice time to do it. A lot of thought went into it, and it was a really interesting process, designing the ring and doing all of that," Russell said.

"When I came to the moment, I couldn't actually get my words out. It was like suddenly I got really nervous when I was on one knee, but that was great, so thank you.”

Russell also joked he hoped the engagement would give him a couple of tenths’ advantage on the track.

"I hope it brings a couple of tenths. Even Lando [Norris] will be getting engaged if it brings a couple of tenths," he laughed.

"Personal life is so important. I think for all of us, we live such a hectic life. The people we live it with are such a key part of that, and riding those emotions with you. And I obviously have been with Carmen for a really long time.

"I don't think it changes a huge amount because she's been such an important person in my life for so long. So, it was just more about making that next step that we needed to do."
