Mickael Pichon has taken his tenth grand prix pole position of the 2005 season after setting the pace at Loket, ahead of tomorrow's Czech Republic Grand Prix.
Suzuki's Kevin Strijbos and Kawasaki's Tanel Leok had led the two free practice sessions, and the Estonian would confirm his speed by holding pole for most of qualifying - until qualifying king Pichon pounced in the dying stages.
"Honestly I didn't thought that it was possible, as in the second free practice session I was two seconds slower than Leok despite all my efforts. I did a late attempt and got the pole, but it was more difficult than ever to take it," explained the French rider.
Meanwhile Leok - who took pole in Sweden - will get the second gate pick, with Strijbos third. Both need strong performances on Sunday, although Strijbos has revealed he already has a contract with Suzuki for next season.
World championship leader Stefan Everts, who recently announced that he'll stay with Yamaha next season, was sixth - just behind L&M team-mate Brian Jorgensen and title rival Josh Coppins.
In the MX2 class, Cedric Melotte and Antonio Cairoli dominated their respective qualifying races.
The MX2 races are scheduled at 12.05 and 15.02 on Sunday, with the MX1 at 13.05 and 16.03 local time. Weather forecast predicts possible showers for the races.
