Carmichael wins High Point, Stewart down and out.

Makita Suzuki's Ricky Carmichael captured his first AMA Toyota Motocross victory of the season in front of an enthusiastic crowd at the 30th running of the High Point National in Mt. Morris.

Carmichael and round one winner James Stewart began Sunday with an epic battle in moto one - Stewart narrowly leading Carmichael for the first 14 laps before a horrific fall in a step-down section after the finish jump handed the lead, and a significant championship advantage, to Carmichael.
Stewart was helped off the track and was later taken to a local hospital with a concussion - which also ruled him out of the second moto.

As a result, Carmichael was able to cruise in the second moto and picked up the overall victory by almost 30 seconds. Yamaha's Chad Reed was second overall with 2-2 moto finishes while Honda's Supercross Lites champion Davi Millsaps finished third (3-3) to take his first premier-class podium in just his second start.

"I feel bad for James," said Ricky sportingly. "I know some people say you should take the win no matter how you can get it but no one wants to see a rider crash. James and I had a killer race going out there."

"I was just out there having a good time," added Carmichael. "The bike was working good and I was doing my best and trying my hardest. I could hear all the fans cheering me on and keeping me going. I was out there pounding out the laps, prepared to do battle. High Point is the closest motocross race to my home in Florida and I grew up racing minibikes here so I feel like this is my home track. It was a great day for me and a great day for the Makita Suzuki team."

Carmichael has now taken command of the early championship standings, leading Reed by nine points with Yamaha's David Vuillemin in third.

In the Motocross Lites class, Ryan Villopoto used a come-from-behind second place finish in the first moto and a strong win in the second to post the first overall win of his career.

Honda's Josh Grant had a solid 3-3 moto finish, good for second overall while KTM's Mike Alessi, last week's winner in Sacramento, wound up third overall (1-8).

The Toyota AMA Motocross Championship will take a one-week hiatus before resuming on June 11 in Southwick, Mass., for the Suzuki Motocross 338 National presented by Scott USA.
