2025 Italian MotoGP: Sprint as it happened

Live updates from Sprint at the 2025 MotoGP Italian Grand Prix

The 2025 MotoGP Italian Grand Prix continues on Saturday 21 June with qualifying and the sprint for the ninth round of the campaign.

Marc Marquez leads the championship coming into Saturday's race action at Mugello, with the factory Ducati rider 32 points clear of the chasing pack following a perfect weekend at Aragon.

Gresini Ducati's Alex Marquez is his nearest challenger in the standings amid a consistent season for the Spaniard, while Pecco Bagnaia is third in the championship - 93 points behind team-mate Marc Marquez.

Pecco Bagnaia has won the last three Italian Grands Prix and comes to Mugello having made a breakthrough with his feeling on the GP25 two weeks ago at Aragon.

Tech3 KTM rider Maverick Vinales was fastest at the end of a tight Friday practice and was confident the Austrian brand's pace was genuine following steps at the Aragon test.

Yamaha's Fabio Quartararo has been cleared to ride on Saturday despite suffering a partial shoulder dislocation in a crash on Friday afternoon.

The Sprint is set to get underway at 2pm BST over 11 laps. Marc Marquez will start on pole position, alongside Bagnaia and Alex Marquez on the front row.

Sprint Report

Victory for Marc Marquez in the Italian MotoGP Sprint sees him increase his advantage of Alex Marquez to 35 points.

Pecco Bagnaia now 98 points adrift of the championship lead after missing out on victory at Mugello for the first time since he crashed out of the lead in the 2021 Grand Prix.

Full report on what was a Sprint whose intrigue was largely collected in the opening laps can be found here.

14:22
Marc Marquez wins the Italian Sprint

It's victory for Marc Marquez in the Italy Sprint. He wins by over a second over Alex Marquez, and Bagnaia takes third place, hanging on from Maverick Vinales.

Di Giannantonio rounds out the top-five, ahead of Bezzecchi, Morbidelli, Raul Fernandez, and Fermin Aldeguer who takes the final point after a last lap pass on Quartararo.

14:20
Lap 10/11

Marc Marquez leads onto the final  lap over Alex Marquez.

Bagnaia still third for now but Vinales is still in contention for that final podium spot.

14:19
Lap 9/11

Marc Marquez is maintaining a 0.6s gap to Alex Marquez, but Bagnaia is coming under increasing pressure from Vinales.  Bagnaia back to a 1:46.6 that time, Marc Marquez out front on a 1:46.0.

14:17
Lap 8/11

Bagnaia starting to struggle. He's a second behind Marquez and only 0.4s clear of Vinales now.

14:15
Lap 7/11

0.6s for Marc Marquez at the front and, as we've seen quite often this year, Bagnaia just unable to get close enough to Alex Marquez to make a pass.

Bezzecchi has passed Quartararo for seventh at the final corner.

14:14
Lap 6/11

Quartararo continues to fall backwards. He's lost out to Di Giannantonio for fifth on that lap, and now Morbidelli passes him for sixth into turn one beginning lap seven. Bezzecchi not far behind now either.

14:12
Lap 5/11

Marquezes continue to lead ahead of Bagnaia, who is coming back towards them now.

There was an investigation into the incident at the first turn with Di Giannantonio, Binder, and Zarco. No further action has been the conclusion.

The clouds, by the way, are beginning to gather.

14:10

Maverick Vinales up to fourth, past Quartararo, on the run to turn one on lap five.

Bagnaia the next target for the rider who was fastest in PR yesterday and FP2 this morning.

14:10
Lap 4/11

Marc Marquez leads over the line but Alex Marquez not far away. Bagnaia's slide has stabilised and he remains 0.7s behind the leaders.

14:09
Marc Marquez leads

Marc Marquez leads at the beginning of lap four. He picks up the tow from Alex Marquez and passes on the brakes into the first turn.

14:08
Lap 3/11

Alex Marquez continues to lead from Marc Marquez. Bagnaia falling away as has so often been the case in the early stages of Sprints this year. He's coming under pressure from Quartararo and Vinales, and the VR46 pair of Di Giannantonio and Morbidelli aren't far away from the podium battle, either.

14:07

Replay of turn one shows there was a small contact with Di Giannantonio that caused Binder to lose the front. Whatever the cause, it was the same outcome for Zarco.

14:06
Acosta OUT

Pedro Acosta has crashed out. Not a good start to the race for the factory KTM team.

14:06
Alex Marquez leads

Bagnaia slipping backwards beginning lap two. Both Marquez brothers dived to his inside at turn one, Bagnaia tried to fight back but he lost out to Alex Marquez at turn two, then Marc at turn four.

14:04
Lap 1/11

Bagnaia leads lap one from Alex Marquez and Marc Marquez, who has recovered to third after his strange launch thanks to a pass on Quartararo at turn four.

14:04

Binder and Zarco both down at turn one. Binder, with that hard front tyre, looked like he lost the front and Zarco was collected by it.

14:03
Sprint start

It's lights out in Mugello and a great start for Bagnaia, Marc Marquez has gone backwards - he was messing with something on the left bar on the line.

14:00
Warm-up lap

Riders are off on their warm-up lap ahead of the Mugello Sprint.

13:57
Tyres

Everyone with soft-compound  rear tyres for the Mugello Sprint, unsurprisingly.

On the front, almost everyone has the medium-compound. The exceptions are Pedro Acosta and Brad Binder who have chosen the hard-compound front tyre.

13:56
Weather

Currently, it's dry at Mugello, but there are some concerns over some nearby rain.

At present, it's 31C of air temperature and 49C track temperature.

13:55
Alex Marquez

Alex Marquez lines up third on the grid and his Silverstone Sprint win remains the only time Marc Marquez has been beaten on a Saturday afternoon this year.

Marquez is without a podium of any kind at Mugello in the premier class, but his improvement in 2025 has been well-documented and Friday showed him to have competitive pace.

13:53
Bagnaia

P2 on the grid for Bagnaia is the best he's achieved this year so far.

He remains without a finish better than third in Sprints in 2025 and is without a Saturday podium since he was third at Jerez.

But Bagnaia is unbeaten in his last five starts at Mugello, and has been more competitive this weekend than in any other race this year.
