All free practice sessions were cancelled due to visibility problems grounding the medial helicopters. The extended qualifying session - of 1hr 15mins, with a traditional rather than knock-out format - was thus the very first MotoGP action of the weekend.

Qualifying was held in fully wet conditions.

A 50-minute free practice session will take place on Sunday morning, instead of the usual warm-up, followed by the race in the afternoon.

Honda LCR's Stefan Bradl is making his second return attempt after fracturing his ankle at Sepang, while Yamaha test rider Katsuyuki Nakasuga is competing as a wild-card.

Yonny Hernandez continues to replace Ben Spies at Pramac Ducati, with Damian Cudlin taking over from Hernandez at PBM and World Supersport-ace Scassa replacing the injured Karel Abraham at Cardion AB.
