The Tasmanian took the lead after mid-race safety car dramas saw his team employ a superior race strategy and road speed to get to the front of the field.

With ten laps remaining, Craig Lowndes was forced to retire his Falcon due to engine failure, while an on-fire Greg Murphy continued to move up the leaderboard, passing Paul Morris to find himself in fourth place, but still eleven seconds behind the third-placed ford of Russell Ingall.

Ambrose had eleven seconds behind him to the next car - enough time to effectively cruise through the last few laps.
