The belief that Michael Schumacher will leave Ferrari for McLaren grew stronger last week, despite both sides denying the possibility of joining forces.

The long-running story linking Schumacher and the Woking team resurfaced in the German press, but was quickly quashed by both McLaren and Schumacher's manager Willi Weber. The German's contract with Ferrari is due to run until the end of next season, although he has a clause which would allow him to leave before that should the car not be competitive. Therefore, it is possible that Schumacher could be seen in a McLaren as early as 1999.
The German has stressed, however, that the challenge of bringing Ferrari the world championship remains his motivation, whilst McLaren and, more especially Mercedes, have received much applause in Germany for beating Schumacher this season, and may want to maintain this role next year.
