The Canadian has high hopes of a podium finish at his home grand prix in Canada this weekend, having split the McLarens during a midweek test at Monza. The new car features a longer wheelbase than its predecessor, along with a redesigned rear suspension set-up. Williams has struggled with traction problems all season, but the Italian test gave Villeneuve greater confidence that the rear of the car would not break away suddenly. The team has also incorporated changes to the exhaust and bodywork in the new design, but will not be redesignating the revised car FW20b
.

Despite the impressive performance at Monza, Williams personnel are reserving judgement on the revisions until after the Canadian meeting. Further changes are planned in time for the French or British grands prix, and the team hope that these will bring a greater improvement.


Villeneuve will hope to improve his current poor record at home, meanwhile, having finished second and suffered an embarrassing early retirement in his two previous Canadian GPs.
