Minardi reserve driver Matteo Bobbi has wished team-mate Justin Wilson well following the Englishman's injury-induced retirement from the Malaysian Grand Prix - despite knowing that any failure to recover could lead to his own F1 debut.

The Italian, a stalwart in Paul Stoddart's Minardi camp, is slated to replace Wilson alongside veteran Jos Verstappen for this weekend's Brazilian Grand Prix should the former FIA F3000 champion not recover from the trapped nerve and temporary paralysis that caused him to drop out of the second round of the world championship at Sepang last weekend.

Bobbi, who is due to make his FIA GT debut in Spain at the same time as the Brazilian GP, is now waiting for the latest news from the Minardi camp before finalising his travel plans.

"I hope that Justin gets better soon, and hope that he can compete in the next grand prix in Brazil," the Italian said, "However, I'm always available for the Minardi team for any eventuality."

Wilson's problem was later blamed on the controversial HANS device, which had broken free of its moorings in the PS03 and caused undue pressure on the driver's shoulders.

"After my first stop, the car had terrific front-end grip, but felt loose at the back and I had to work quite hard at the wheel," Wilson, who was airlifted to hospital in Malaysia, revealed, "The harder I worked, the more the belts began to slip off the HANS device. Eventually, they came off altogether and I started rattling around and banging my shoulders on the side of the cockpit, which was pretty excruciating. I tried to keep going, but the pain became too intense and I had to stop. By the time I pitted, I could hardly move because my arms and shoulders were so sore."

Wilson has admitted that he hopes to fit enough to continue his maiden F1 season at Interlagos

"I had a scan at the hospital but there's no lasting damage," he told BBC Online, "I don't feel too bad now. They've given me a few pain-killing injections and I have been told to take it easy for a few days. I don't see there being any problem for Brazil - I should be fit in plenty of time."

After a successful test at Fiorano, Bobbi will continue to prepare for his GT debut with the BMS Scuderia Italia Ferrari 550 Maranello pending any call from Minardi.
