Barcelona test - day one: 21 February.

Mark Webber set the pace as the final pre-season Formula One test in Barcelona got underway in mixed weather conditions on Tuesday.

Cold but dry conditions in the morning gave way to rain in the afternoon which prevented the five teams that took to the track from completing any extensive mileage but Webber emerged from the day with the quickest time in his Williams Cosworth as he edged out the McLaren of Kimi Raikkonen by less than a tenth of a second.

Raikkonen was at the wheel of the MP4-21 that he will use for the opening race of the F1 season in Bahrain in a matter of weeks with his focus on the day being on evaluating Micheline tyres for the race in the Middle East - the Finn completing two longer runs of 20 laps in the process.

Robert Doornbos set the third quickest time for Red Bull although the weather conditions prevented the Dutchman from completing as many laps as the team had hoped for at the start of the day. However the Red Bull Ferrari would still complete nearly 50 laps with Doornbos posting a best time of 1min 18.439secs.

"We lost track time, but it did not really affect our programme, as putting distance on the car was more of a priority than development today," chief test engineer, Ian Morgan said. "As we have done quite a bit of running in the wet already, we decided it was not really worth going out in the afternoon - although we did do a couple of laps at the end of the day, just to check some new software."

Tiago Monteiro posted an impressive fourth quickest time for MF1 Racing ahead of the second McLaren of Montoya. However the day didn't pass without problems for Montoya who suffered a transmission issue early in the afternoon. The team were working on rectifying before the decision was taken to end the Colombians running for the day due to the wet conditions.

Behind Montoya, much of the focus was on Takuma Sato as the Super Aguri F1 team made its first public appearance on the opening day of the test.

Having taken part in a brief shakedown of the SA05 last week, Sato completed limited running with the car the fledgling team will use for the opening races of the year with the focus on ironing out any initial problems with the package and completing system checks rather than on chasing lap times.

"The priority of this test was to begin track testing of the SA05 systems - including electronics, hydraulics and brakes," chief technical officer Mark Preston said. "Although our reliability was not great today, it is the reason why we are here, to test and sort these kinds of problems out.

"This morning's running was cut short due to a small hydraulic problem which was soon rectified. However, in the rain-drenched afternoon, Taku spun at the hairpin, with no damage to the car, while experimenting with new traction control software. This afternoon's running was cut short by a similar problem to the one we had this morning. We will now be working overnight and are hoping for a successful day's running tomorrow when we start our tyre programme for Bahrain."

Nico Rosberg completed the list of drivers to venture onto the Catalunya track, although his quickest time was well off the pace of the front runners.

Testing continues tomorrow, when Honda, Renault and Toyota are all due to be out on track.
