Felipe Drugovich stormed to his first Formula 2 career pole position after a sensational middle sector ensured he saw off Callum Illot for top spot at Silverstone.

The Brazilian shocked everyone in the final moments of qualifying, propelling himself to the top of the time-sheets - 0.6s clear of anyone else at the time.

Drugovich was in a league of his own in the middle part of the lap as he was half a second clear of the rest of the field in sector two.

Illot was eventually the only man to get within two-tenths of Drugovich and will line up second on the grid.

Illot’s main title rival Robert Shwartzman could only manage 18th on the grid, 1.5s down on the pole-sitter.

To make matters worse for Shwartzman, he's under investigation by the stewards for impeding Sean Gelael.

Mick Schumacher fared better in the other PREMA car, putting his car third. The German didn’t have it all his own way in qualifying, having languished at the lower regions of the time-sheets. Schumacher was blocked by the Trident of Roy Nissany into the Vale chicane - with the incident being put under investigation by race control.

Christian Lundgaard led the early stages for ART but only managed fourth ahead of Nikita Mazepin and Jack Aitken.

Jehan Daruvala was the highest Carlin in seventh, 0.613s off the pace with Guanyu Zhou, Yuki Tsuonda and Louis Deletraz rounding out the top ten.

Saturday’s feature race looks set to be an interesting one with both the medium and hard tyre wearing very quickly due to high loads experienced through Silverstone's high-speed corners.

The race is scheduled to start after Formula 1 qualifying at 15:45 local time.
