Piastri equals Charles Leclerc’s record from 2017 of five poles in a row.

Pole position has allowed Piastri to extend his lead in the championship to 55.5 points going into tomorrow’s first sprint race at the Yas Marina Circuit.

Piastri’s closest rival for the championship is Prema teammate Robert Shwartzman, who qualified fourth.

Jack Doohan impressed on only his second F2 outing, qualifying on the front row alongside Piastri with a superb lap in the MP Motorsport.

Formula 1 bound Guanyu Zhou secured third having briefly led the way in the dying stages of qualifying.

Ralph Boschung qualified fifth in the lead Campos ahead of ART’s Theo Pourchaire, who has made a speedy recovery since his dramatic shunt on the opening lap of the feature race in Saudi Arabia.

Liam Lawson, Felipe Drugovich, Dan Ticktum and Jehan Daruvala completed the top 10 in qualifying.

Daruvala will start the first sprint race from pole position ahead of Ticktum.
