Joel Smets earned another podium double yesterday in Italy, he Belgian beginning another afternoon of fine work by taking second place onboard the 450 in the Motocross GP class, behind Stefan Everts, before returning to the track to beat KTM team-mate Javier Garcia Vico in the 650 race.

"I drew up to the back of Stefan Everts and was lining him up for a pass when I started to lose concentration thinking about where I might be able to make a move; then I crashed and the win was gone," said Joel of his MX GP race. "It was a good result to take second today because the Championship is always changing, Pichon lost points this afternoon and Everts took some back. Federici is not far away and Pit (Beirer) seems to be getting stronger."

Turning to his 650cc outing, Smets admitted it hadn't begun as well as he'd liked: "It was the first time in the 650 class that I was struggling at the beginning of the race but I was taking different lines from the Motocross GP moto and this took a while to get used to.

"The guys in front of me were very fast but I pushed and managed to increase the pace. I'm aware that sometimes I will be second in this series and I have to be ready for that," he admitted.
