Smets hungry for more.

Joel Smets will be on the hunt for his second podium result of the 2004 MX1 world championships this weekend at the Grand Prix of Germany, having sampled his first taste of champagne last Sunday with third position at the Grand Prix of the Netherlands.

Now finding his speed and confidence after a pre-season knee ligament injury, Smets is showing a good rhythm with his new factory Suzuki RM-Z 450 and will be pleased to arrive at the Talkessel circuit in Teutschenthal this weekend, the scene of his 2001 triumph when the five-times world champion broke the record for the most victories ever in the old 500cc class.

"The problems with my knee and the changes it forced to my training as well as all the time missed testing the bike meant getting to the podium in Valkenswaard was a real challenge," he admitted. "It was no real surprise for me because it was all part of a plan but I was still happy to be there and now want more podium results.

"I like the track at Teutschenthal but to be honest there is not really a track that I don't like. I love riding motorbikes and the track does not matter so much," added the ever enthusiastic Joel.

Team-mate Kevin Strijbos gained a season best fifth position at Valkenswaard last week and was running with the leaders during the GP motos of 35 minutes and 2 laps duration. He also took his best ever qualifying standing of second place on Saturday.

"Teutschenthal is a good track but if I have to be critical then it is too fast," said Kevin. "It will be a good place for the 450, for sure better than the last time on the 250, but personally I prefer more technical circuits. My aim as always will be to make some good laps and finish as high as I can. I feel good and we have been practising this week without any problems."

The weather forecast for the weekend is not looking good with cloud and showers predicted for both days.
