Thai MotoGP, Buriram reaction LIVE: Aprilia begins 2026 on top, Ducati nightmare

Live updates from Sunday’s season-opening 2026 Thai MotoGP at Buriram.

Key Moments

After Saturday’s thrilling Sprint, MotoGP faces its first full-length grand prix of the season at Buriram in Thailand on Sunday afternoon.

KTM’s Pedro Acosta was a surprise winner in the Sprint, brilliantly taking the fight to reigning champion Marc Marquez after Aprilia’s pre-race favourite Marco Bezzecchi crashed from an early lead.

Acosta looked to have lost out on victory when a firm block pass from Marquez sent the youngster wide with a lap to go. But Marquez was penalised one place for “causing contact”, allowing Acosta to claim his first premier-class victory.

Bezzecchi, fastest in every session he took part in before the Sprint, will now be desperate to make amends for his error – the Italian’s third Saturday accident - when he again starts from pole position in the grand prix.

Marquez and Acosta will be looking to pick up where they left off, while Trackhouse Aprilia’s Raul Fernandez also targets a double podium to kick off the new season.

Further back, Marquez’s factory Ducati team-mate Francesco Bagnaia could only reach ninth place from a lowly 13th on the grid, but his recovery hopes should be aided by the longer 26-lap grand prix distance.

Fabio di Giannantonio’s Sprint podium hopes effectively ended with contact from Alex Marquez on the opening lap, while Joan Mir was the top Honda in seventh.

Yamaha’s one-second per lap deficit with the new V4 continued in the Sprint, when Jack Miller was 13.4s adrift in 15th place, but beat factory star Fabio Quartararo.

Honda LCR tookie Diogo Moreira will score his first MotoGP points if he can repeat Saturday’s 13th place, while WorldSBK champion Toprak Razgatlioglu crashed and rejoined on his way to 20th for Pramac Yamaha.

The 2026 Thai MotoGP starts at 3:00pm local time (8am UK).

Marco Bezzecchi wins the 2026 Thai MotoGP

Marco Bezzecchi, who also has rear tyre wear issues, dominates the Thai MotoGP.

Pedro Acosta finishes 2nd for KTM, Raul Fernandez hangs on to 3rd.

Joan Mir tyre issue!

HRC's Joan Mir also has a rear tyre issue! The Honda rider is cruising back to the pits. Is it the heat? Excessive tyre wear? Are the tyres being cut by some debris or kerbing?

UPDATE: Mir parks in the garage with visible rubber missing from the middle of the tyre.

Double Marquez disaster

Both Marquez brothers are returning to the pits on a scooter with Alex Marquez crashing out.

Marc Marquez puncture!

Marc Marquez has a flat rear tyre, it's hanging off the rim! He's out!

The Ducati rider was lucky to stay on board as he speared off track; the rim is heavily damaged.

Marc Marquez's exit hands Jorge Martin fourth place.

The reigning champion had been one of the fastest riders on track, after Bezzecchi.

08:34
Fernandez under threat

Raul Fernandez has suddenly lost his advantage over Pedro Acosta for second. Marc Marquez is also not far from the KTM rider.

Is Fernandez struggling with the shoulder injury from warm-up?

The battles

With six laps to go, here are some of the closest battles on track:

3rd: Pedro Acosta/Marc Marquez

6th: Joan Mir/Fabio di Giannantonio/Alex Marquez

10th: Francesco Bagnaia/Brad Binder/ Luca Marini

08:31
KTM ride height

A tip off from my colleague Alex Whitworth, watch the factory KTMs out of Turn 3 (hairpin), they appear not to be electing to use their ride-height device.

It's something we heard Ducati's Francesco Bagnaia talking about at Sepang last year, when his system wasn't working but gave better traction on corner exit, albeit at the expense of braking:

"It was a loss on the straight,  but coming out of the corners, it wasn’t bad, because it makes the shock absorber work better," Bagnaia said at the top. "The only negative thing when braking. But it wasn’t too bad when exiting corners.”"

Bezzecchi out of reach

Barring a mistake or technical issue, Marco Bezzecchi looks to have this in the bag.

The Aprilia star is still the fastest rider on track, building his lead over Raul Fernandez to 2.8s.

Pedro Acosta is closest to Bezzecchi's pace, but now five-seconds behind the Aprilia, in third.

Acosta vs Martin vs Marc Marquez

Pedro Acosta makes several determined attempts to pass Jorge Martin for third, who retaliates each time.

But Marc Marquez then takes advantage and overtakes them both on the exit of the Turn 3 hairpin!

Acosta quickly re-passes the Ducati - he's getting comfortable at doing that.

The order is now: Marco Bezzecchi 1.9s Raul Fernandez 3.2s Pedro Acosta, Marc Marquez, Jorge Martin.

08:16
Bezzecchi 1m 30.5s

Marco Bezzecchi is in a class of his own at the moment, lapping 0.4s faster than second place Raul Fernandez, who is the only other rider in the 1m 30s.
