Sito Pons escapes 24-year prison sentence and €12m fine

Sito Pons has been acquitted of a charge which could have resulted in 24 years in prison plus a €12m (£10.6m / $12.6m) fine.

The former world champion was accused of six crimes against the tax authorities, surrounding a failure to pay tax in Spain between 2010 and 2014.

The prosecution demanded a 24-year prison sentence plus a €12m fine but Pons has escaped both.

The Court of Barcelona found that he spent more than 200 days outside of Spain during this four-year period (at motorcycle circuits around the world). It also found that his tax residence was in Monaco between 2010 and 2012, and in the United Kingdom from 2012 to 2014.

Pons was the 1988 and 1989 250cc world champion, and as team owner of Pons Racing he won the 2013 Moto2 title with Pol Espargaro.
