Finland says MotoGP round postponed

MotoGP's return to Finland this season has been postponed, according to the event organisers.

A statement explained that the decision was taken by Dorna Sports and race track owner KymiRing 'in accordance with the instructions of the Finnish Government' which has recommended 'events for more than 500 people not be held before August due to a coronavirus pandemic'.

'Dorna Sport has promised to announce the future of MotoGP Finland as soon as possible', the statement added.

The new KymiRing circuit had been due to host the country's first motorcycle grand prix since 1982, on July 12. But its postponement amid the coronavirus pandemic is unsurprising since the circuit still needed to receive official homologation, plus a Michelin tyre test, before the grand prix could take place.

The two preceding events on the heavily-revised 2020 schedule, at Sachsenring and Assen, have also announced they will need to postpone due to extended bans on public gatherings in their respective countries.

MotoGP is yet to officially confirm the delay for Sachsenring, Assen or KymiRing but is currently understood to be aiming for a best-case scenario of around ten races this season, most if not all taking place behind closed doors.

August, somewhere in Europe, is viewed as the most optimistic starting date for the season...
