2022 British Superbike Silverstone - Qualifying Results

Glenn Irwin claims the first Bennetts British Superbike pole of 2022 after setting a new all-time lap record. 

Yamaha, who dominated all three practice sessions, started qualifying in the same vein as Bradley Ray immediately set a new all-time lap record. 

On the brink of setting the first-ever sub 53s lap around the National layout, the Rich Energy OMG Racing Yamaha rider didn’t remain fastest for long though.

Team-mate Kyle Ryde managed to better Ray’s effort with a sub 53s time, but not before Honda Racing’s Glenn Irwin set a blistering time of 52.796s.

Behind the top three with less than five minutes to go was FS-3 Kawasaki rider Rory Skinner, who continues to impress in what will be his second top flight season in 2022.

Skinner was then bumped down to sixth as last season’s second and third placed riders began to make a move. Tommy Bridewell went fourth fastest, while pre-weekend favourite Jason O’Halloran slotted into fifth.  

O’Halloran is on solo duty for McAMS Yamaha this weekend after team-mate Tarran Mackenzie was ruled out after suffering a left ankle fracture during last week’s two-day test, which has since been operated on successfully. 

There was a late red flag after an initial black and orange flag was being waved at Danny Buchan due the SYNETIQ BMW rider suffering mechanical problems. 

Happy with their lap times, the top three of Irwin, Ryde and Ray remained in pit lane once the on-track action re-stared, which proved to be the correct call as no one improved. 

There was a late fall for Dan Linfoot at Luffield, making him the second IForce BMW rider to suffer a crash.

British Superbike Qualifying One

After failing to secure a top 12 spot during free practice, both Leon Haslam and Tom Sykes needed to advance through Q1 in order to battle for pole. 

Eager to do so, Haslam started Q1 on the right foot as he went quickest of anyone. However, with plenty of other big names such as G. Irwin, Peter Hickman and Danny Kent also needing to go through Q1, a lot was left to be decided. 

Irwin was the first rider to go quicker than Haslam as the Northern Irishman set a time of 53.138s - +0.037s off the all-time lap record set by O’Halloran. Hickman then joined his fellow road-racing specialist inside the top two. 

Unlike MotoGP, it’s the top six, not top two that advance from Q1 to Q2. With that said, 2013 WorldSBK champion Sykes was left sweating come the end of Q1 after being the rider closest to missing out. Sykes eventually held on from Luke Mossey by just 0.010s. 

Also in the top six in what was his first British Superbike qualifying, Dan Jones became the first rider to crash after going down at Brooklands. Jones’ fall wasn’t enough to stop him from advancing however. 

The six riders to make it through included Irwin, Hickman, Haslam, Jones, Takumi Takahashi and Sykes.
