New name, new look for MG challenge

The rebranded MG KX Clubcard Fuel Save team sets sights on an elusive BTCC title in 2014.

Triple Eight Engineering is confident it has made the necessary improvements to ensure both Jason Plato and Sam Tordoff can challenge for the 2014 Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship title in the MG 6 GT.

An unchanged driver line-up for the factory-assisted team, which will continue to run with backing from Tesco under the revised 'KX Clubcard Fuel Save' banner, work over the winter has instead focused on making the MG 6 more aerodynamic and quicker.

The third season for MG in the series, lead driver Plato - who has won 14 races for the manufacturer in two years - is confident he has the car that can take him all the way to a title in 2014.

"We've done two years of this project now, we're starting the third and we're better prepared than we ever have been. We've got genuine manufactured developments coming through now, which we've never had before and in the past we've spent time in the off season trying to understand the car, but we have that information now and we also have a good wet setup too, which had previously been a big achilles heel for us.

"We were a bit unlucky last year, but the mindset this year is very different. All of that gives us real confidence ahead of this season and as a team we're a more organised and in the best position we've been to challenge for the title."

Youngster Tordoff is also excited heading into 2014 after exceeding expectations in his debut BTCC season last year en route to sixth overall.

"I'm excited to get back into the car, I feel a lot better than I did last year and that's down to having the experience of a season in BTCC now under my belt. Last year we reached our objectives a lot quicker than we thought we would, the win certainly caused me to reassess my objectives and this year I want to be fighting at the front, challenging for podiums and ultimately wins.

"I've realised that consistency is key and I'll be going all out to finish every race in the points and that should allow the challenge for the title to build itself. I've got no excuses; I have a fantastic team, car and team-mate, and we've improved over the winter. I think we'll be really strong again this season."
