Verstappen In Or Out?

Time seems to be running out for Dutch F1 star Jos Verstappen as his Formula One future hangs in the balance, Tyrrell1s option on Verstappen expired last weekend but was not re-signed as Tyrrell are still in negotiation with the 1997 Japanese Formula Nippon Champion Pedro de la Rosa.

The Spaniard is rumoured to have access to a budget in the region of $6.5 million from Spanish fuel giant Repsol, formerly the backer of the Ford world rally team with Carlos Sainz.

The Spaniard is rumoured to have access to a budget in the region of $6.5 million from Spanish fuel giant Repsol, formerly the backer of the Ford world rally team with Carlos Sainz.

It is also thought that Formula One supremo FOCA boss Bernie Ecclestone is keen to see the Spaniard in Formula One next year as this will boost attendance at the normally sparsely attended Spanish Grand Prix and also attract huge Spanish TV audiences for his digital coverage of Formula One.

Verstappen may still have an opportunity at Prost Grand Prix which has not yet confirmed Italian Jarno Trulli alongside Olivier Panis.

Prost wants Trulli to sign a multi-year contract, but Williams has already shown an interest in the Italian for the 1999 season when it is rumoured that Jacques Villeneuve will head the new Formula One superteam backed by British American Tobacco.
