Schumi Lid Gets New Paint Job

Michael Schumacher is to try a new paint scheme on his crash helmet at Suzuka, and hopes that it may be the key to championship success.


Known for being among the first to try out differently shaped hemets, Schumacher has so far resisted the temptation to mess with his patriotic German flag-coloured design. However, he recently asked Pierre van Ginneken to come up with a new scheme for 1999, and the results will be seen for the first time in Japan this weekend.

However, he recently asked Pierre van Ginneken to come up with a new scheme for 1999, and the results will be seen for the first time in Japan this weekend.


Although the basic elements remain, Schumacher has requested the introduction of a chrome border at the bottom of his traditional Bell helmet, with chequered patterns introduced on the sides. It remains to be seen whether the new look will bring the German luck - and whether the design will still be around in 1999.
