Nick Wirth has resigned his role as chief designer at Benetton, after four years with the Enstone team.

The surprise move, which was announced by the team tonight [Friday], follows repeated differences of opinion between Wirth and team boss Rocco Benetton over the development of last year's car and the path its replacement should take, and the former Simtek founder has decided to explore other opportunities.

"After considerable discussions with both Rocco Benetton and the technical management, we have agreed that we have differing ideas as to the future direction of the car's development," Wirth admitted, "I have therefore decided that the moment opportune for me to leave Benetton Formula to pursue new career opportunities."

Wirth will be replaced by Tim Densham, who Benetton recently recruited from the nascent Honda works effort. Densham will slot straight into his predecessor's role, and be supported by the existing technical department.

"I want to thank Nick for all his work over the past four years," Rocco Benetton said, "We have recently strengthened our design department and, while it is unfortunate that Nick is leaving the team, I am confident that we are moving in the right direction to take the team back to the top of the championship."
