Max Mosley : Laying Down The Law.
Fresh from his clampdown on slower drivers who deliberately block those trying to lap them, the President of the FIA, Max Mosley has decreed that Formula One's move to treaded tyres will be with a single tread pattern.
It appears almost certain that Formula One cars will be equipped with treaded, as opposed to grooved, tyres within the next few years and Mosley is planning detailed discussions with current supplier Bridgestone and Michelin (who enter F1 next season) on how to construct the tyre.

It appears almost certain that Formula One cars will be equipped with treaded, as opposed to grooved, tyres within the next few years and Mosley is planning detailed discussions with current supplier Bridgestone and Michelin (who enter F1 next season) on how to construct the tyre.
When the idea was originally announced the theory was that tyre companies would be allowed to construct their own tread patterns but, says Mosley, that is no longer the case. "There will only be one tread pattern, otherwise you will end up with three variables, the construction, the compound and the tread pattern all being developed at once."
Mosley hopes to strike an agreement with the two firms over a single tread pattern which can be used in the wet and dry. As most Grand Prix are run in dry conditions there is a risk that the tyre companies would construct a tyre with dry weather bias, therefore if it rained the tyre wouldn't react as well, making the cars undriveable.
Another possible solution to be discussed would be to have a single tread pattern and allow the tyre companies to offer their own compounds and constructions.
