Shanghai welcomes Jordan.

Eddie Jordan became the first Formula One team principal to visit Shanghai International Circuit this week, with an excursion to the track which will host the inaugural Chinese round of the FIA Formula One World Championship.

The trip was arranged following an invitation from Shanghai Municipal Government, Shanghai International Circuit and the Chinese national television broadcaster CCTV.

Jordan was given a tour of the 5.45km circuit being constructed close to the commercial heart of Shanghai and Shanghai International Circuit President Mao Xiaohan confirmed detailed plans to develop the new complex not just as a Formula One circuit but as a facility for the local population and as a centre piece to the economic and cultural development of Shanghai.

"What I have seen here today is a vision for how F1 and motorsport generally can play an important part in many aspects of developing a country's economic and cultural growth," said Jordan, "I am most impressed by the plans for the new circuit - a fantastic project which will set new standards for Formula One and bring global awareness of the high standards in Shanghai."

Shanghai International circuit president Mao Xiaohan added: "As the Chinese Grand Prix of 2004 is approaching, we are very delighted to welcome new friends to Shanghai. Shanghai has enjoyed world fame for its outstanding achievements, particularly in the aspect of design and construction.

"Currently, the construction of Shanghai International Circuit is well on schedule. We are confident to deliver an exciting circuit and hold a successful Chinese Grand Prix, and we hope all drivers and teams will enjoy competing here. Moreover, we feel very glad to see that every team shows their passion and care to our circuit and today, Mr. Eddie Jordan's personal visit is warmly welcomed. It is our hope that every driver and team can achieve great performances here in Shanghai."

Mr Yu Zhifei, deputy general manager Shanghai International Circuit continued: "These are extremely exciting times for all of us at the Shanghai International Circuit. The Grand Prix is a significant event for the people of China and we are immensely proud of the unique opportunity that it gives us to welcome sportsmen, spectators and television audiences from all over the world.

"Interest in Formula One is increasing dramatically in China and we are delighted that our partnership with Jordan has been so successful. Eddie Jordan has been instrumental in helping us achieve this success and we look forward to continuing to work with Eddie and his team as we work towards the inaugural Chinese Grand Prix in 2004."

Prior to visiting the circuit, Eddie Jordan attended a press conference with Chinese national media after which he was the Guest of Honour at a lunch hosted by Mr Zu Zhifei, deputy general manager for SIC and CCTV.

Following his tour of the new circuit facilities Jordan was Guest of Honour at a dinner hosted by leaders of the Shanghai Sports Bureau Mr Jin Guoxiang, chairman Shanghai Sports Bureau, and Mr Zhao Yinghua, deputy chairman Shanghai Sports Bureau. Jordan also met Governmental Officials, including Shanghai deputy mayor with responsibility for Health, Sport and Television, Mr Yang Xiaodu, at a Municipal Government Reception which emphasised the level of importance placed by Shanghai on the establishment of China on the FIA Formula One World Championship calendar.
