Kimi Raikkonen suffered his fourth engine failure of the year in the first practice session of the Japanese Grand Prix weekend at Suzuka, and will thus have to take yet another ten-place grid penalty, potentially damaging McLaren's chances of securing the constructors' title before the last race in China.

The Finn has already had to make engine changes at the French, British and Italian grands prix although, in those events, he was able to recover to second, third and fourth places from mid-grid positions. This time, however, the failure won't damage his chances in the drivers' championship.

Raikkonen pulled off the track with flames licking at the rear of his McLaren after running only eight laps in the first half of the hour-long session. The engine in his car was the one that had finished second in the Brazilian Grand Prix a fortnight ago, mirroring the failure that had occurred at Silverstone. Those in France and Italy happened with new engines.
