Lewis Hamilton headed up a one-two finish for Mercedes in the final Formula 1 practice session ahead of qualifying for this weekend's Spanish Grand Prix, edging out teammate Valtteri Bottas by just one-hundredth of a second.

After leading FP2 on Friday afternoon, Hamilton continued to sit on top of the timesheets as he turned in a fastest lap of 1:17.281 on the Supersoft tyre, beating Bottas by 0.013s in the final classification.

Despite Hamilton predicting that the rival Ferrari team would make a step forward on Saturday after "sand-bagging" through the first two practices, Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen were unable to beat either Mercedes, finishing third and fourth overall, both within three-tenths of a second of the headline time.

Daniel Ricciardo led Red Bull's charge in fifth place, lapping seven-tenths of a second back from Hamilton, but teammate Max Verstappen was limited to just five laps due to an electric issue that left him P12 overall in the final standings.

Kevin Magnussen put in an impressive display for Haas to head up the midfield in P6, with teammate Romain Grosjean following in seventh. Home favourites Carlos Sainz Jr. and Fernando Alonso took eighth and ninth respectively as Pierre Gasly completed the top 10 for Toro Rosso.

Gasly's teammate, Brendon Hartley, brought out a red flag with two minutes remaining in the session after spinning off at the high-speed Turn 9 when he clipped the grass. The shunt left the rear-end of Hartley's Toro Rosso with significant damage, only worsened when more parts fell off the car as it was craned away.

Qualifying takes place at 3pm local time in Barcelona on Saturday (2pm BST).
