Lewis Hamilton and Kimi Raikkonen have been handed reprimands for failing to adhere to track limits in opening practice for Formula 1’s Mexico City Grand Prix.
Hamilton gets reprimand for Mexico F1 track limits breach

Hamilton ran wide across the grass at Turn 1 during a moment early in the first F1 practice session at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez on Friday morning, before rejoining the circuit between Turns 2 and 3.

The seven-time world champion reported over team radio that he “couldn’t slow down there” as the drivers struggled with the dusty conditions on a green track early on in FP1.

Hamilton was called before the stewards because he failed to follow race director Michael Masi’s notes that state drivers must re-join the circuit to the left-hand side of the bollard at Turn 3.

The stewards noted “the driver’s comments in relation to track conditions and his attempt to steer to the left after leaving the track” before giving Hamilton a driving reprimand.

Following his own moment at Turn 1, Raikkonen rejoined the circuit before Turn 2 and the Alfa Romeo driver also received a reprimand for his transgression.

It marks Hamilton and Raikkonen’s first driving reprimands of the 2021 F1 season.

Hamilton ended opening practice just 0.076s behind Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas, while Raikkonen finished 12th.

Second practice in Mexico City gets underway at 1500 local time (2100 GMT).
