Honda youngster Yuki Tsunoda will graduate to the FIA Formula 2 championship with Carlin in 2020.

Tsunoda, 19, has been part of the Honda Formula Dream Project since 2018 when he won the Japanese Formula 4 title before moving into FIA Formula 3 last year.

Tsunoda finished ninth in the championship, taking his sole victory in the Monza Sprint Race from sixth on the grid, as well as scoring two further podiums through the season for Jenzer Motorsport.

The Japanese driver was confirmed to be moving up to F2 for 2020 as part of Honda’s motorsport programme announcements on Friday, linking up with Carlin.

Tsunoda is set to be the most senior Red Bull-linked junior on F1’s undercard in 2020 after it was confirmed that former F3 colleague Juri Vips would be moving into Super Formula with Team Mugen.

Tsunoda's compatriot and Honda Formula Dream Project stablemate Teppei Natori will return to Japan for 2020 after one year in F3, racing in the new Super Formula Lights series.

Carlin is yet to confirm who will partner Tsunoda in 2020, having fielded Louis Deletraz and Nobuharu Matsushita last year. Deletraz has since signed for Charouz Racing System.

The new F2 season gets underway in Bahrain on March 21.
