Kanaan tops Carb Day ahead of Indy 500

Tony Kanaan closed out practice for the 102nd Indianapolis 500 at the top of the timesheets during the traditional 'Carb Day' running at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Friday, giving AJ Foyt Racing a boost ahead of Sunday's race.

2013 Indy 500 winner Kanaan managed to head up the timesheets with a best lap average speed of 227.791 mph (39.5099s) to finish more than 2 mph clear of former Chip Ganassi Racing teammate Scott Dixon.

Marco Andretti continued his impressive form at IMS by finishing Carb Day third-fastest in the #98 Andretti-Herta Autosport entry as Sebastien Bourdais and Charlie Kimball rounded out the top five for Dale Coyne Racing and Carlin respectively.

Defending Indy 500 champion Takuma Sato ended the day sixth ahead of Will Power, while Danica Patrick managed to finish eighth despite being sidelined for much of the session by an electrical issue. Her Ed Carpenter Racing teammate Spencer Pigot took ninth as Ed Jones rounded out the top 10 positions.

In the traditional Carb Day pit stop competition, Dixon's #9 Chip Ganassi Racing crew emerged victorious after defeating James Hinchcliffe and Schmidt Peterson Motorsports 2-1 in the final of the knockout contest.

The drivers will next hit the track at Indianapolis for the start of the 500-mile race, which kicks off at 5:20pm BST on Sunday.
