Toyota has unveiled a hydrogen powered race car based on its current World Endurance Championship challenger for testing on Wednesday at the 2025 24 Hours of Le Mans.

The Japanese manufacturer has been very active in the field of hydrogen development, firstly with a Corolla that races in the Super Taikyu series.

It brought its hydrogen powered Corolla to Le Mans for a demonstration lap on the 24-hour circuit two years ago, while it has also conducted a demo of its GR Yaris H2 rally car in 2022 at the Ypres Rally.

The continuation of that development has brought Toyota to the GR LH2 Racing Concept, which is a hydrogen-engined car based on the GR010 HYBRID Hypercar it currently competes with in the World Endurance Championship.

The radical test car will be used by Toyota as a development bed for a potential future hydrogen class at Le Mans.

The GR LH2 Racing Concept is is powered by a liquid hydrogen engine and a hybrid system.

This unveil comes as part of Toyota’s 40th anniversary celebrations of its first entry at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

The team will also run a special livery on its WEC challenger during this week’s 2025 24 Hours of Le Mans as part of those 40th anniversary celebrations.

The 8 Toyota of Sebastien Buemi, Brendon Hartley and Ryo Hirakawa topped the Hypercar class in Sunday’s official Le Mans test day with a 3m26.246s.

Despite its strong run in the test, it moved to quash talk that it progressed into the event proper as the fastest car.
