Former grand prix rider Doriano Romboni has tragically lost his life after a practice incident for a charity Supermoto event in memory of MotoGP rider Marco Simoncelli.

Romboni, 44, was one of numerous Italian two-wheel stars taking part in the second running of the Sic Supermoto Day at the Latina Circuit in Italy.

Reports indicate that Romboni fell and was then struck by another rider, circumstances that sadly resemble Simoncelli's death in the 2011 Malaysian Grand Prix. Romboni was evacuated to hospital by helicopter but succumbed to his injuries.

Romboni won six grands prix in the 125 and 250cc classes from 1990-1995, then went on to claim a rostrum in the premier 500cc category before a brief switch to World Superbikes (pictured).

Crash.net extends its deepest condolences to Romboni's family and friends.
