'Big bang' puts Checa in high gear.

Carlos Checa claims he is still getting to grips with the new configuration YZR-M1 engine that the four Yamaha riders raced for the first time at South Africa.

The 'big bang' engine groups the power pulses closer together, allowing the rear tyre to recover traction between each salvo - and was used to devastating effect by Checa's Welkom winning team-mate Valentino Rossi.

Carlos Checa claims he is still getting to grips with the new configuration YZR-M1 engine that the four Yamaha riders raced for the first time at South Africa.

The 'big bang' engine groups the power pulses closer together, allowing the rear tyre to recover traction between each salvo - and was used to devastating effect by Checa's Welkom winning team-mate Valentino Rossi.

"(The big bang engine) feels like you're using a high gear all the time - but a high gear with lots of power," explained the Spaniard. "I'm still learning the new engine and need more time to work out how it affects tyre life."
