Mansell Crash Scare.

The first BTCC event at Donington (14/6/98) saw Mansell lose out at the start to a host of the regular front wheel drive exponents as the track conditions were less than ideal with a constant downpour and several areas of the track covered in standing water. He settled into the race running mid field until the fateful moment when he was to spear off the track at Coppice Corner, a notoriously difficult bend at the best of times, but today in attrocious weather conditions the uphill corner with the blind apex caught Mansell out and sidelined him from the remainder of round 11 at Donington.

As Mansell approached Coppice Corner a third of the way into the race, his front wheels locked up and the engine stalled which gave him no means with which to recover, he hit the tyre barrier with some force and was taken to the circuit medical centre, where he was given the all-clear to race in the 12th round, his car however had to be repaired in time by the West Surrey Racing Team.

Anthony Reid won the race, his first official BTCC event for the RML Nissan squad, Rickard Rydell was second in the TWR Volvo S40 and Will Hoy an equally impressive third in the sister Ford Mondeo to Nigel Mansell.
