Zonta Confirmed At Bar
As has been widely expected in F1 circles for some time, Ricardo Zonta has signed to partner Jacques Villeneuve at British American Racing next season.
The announcement capped a good weekend for the 22-year old Brazilian who, on Sunday, clinched the FIA GT Championship title with co-driver Klaus Ludwig. This was Zonta's second title in two years, following the F3000 crown in 1997.

The announcement capped a good weekend for the 22-year old Brazilian who, on Sunday, clinched the FIA GT Championship title with co-driver Klaus Ludwig. This was Zonta's second title in two years, following the F3000 crown in 1997.
(As a driver new to Formula One, I could not have asked for more than to join a new team that wants to start winning as soon as possible,) Zonta said, (I am also thrilled to be driving alongside such a successful and experienced driver as Jacques Villeneuve, from whom I am certain I will learn a great deal.)
The signing confirmed rumours that have circulated in the F1 paddock for some time, and ended the hopes of both Sauber and Minardi, who had entertained hopes that Zonta would join them for 1999. Sauber were the earliest to concede defeat, signing fellow Brazilian Pedro Diniz two weeks ago. Zonta's deal has also dented the hopes of Mika Salo, who was apparently in the running to join F1's newest team.
BAR team principal Craig Pollock was clearly delighted to have signed his man, describing the Brazilian as showing "the talent and maturity of a driver of far more experience."
(What impresses us most,) the Scot continued, (is Zonta's intelligence and willingness to take calculated risks. When the time comes to make the move, he always does, and he is smart enough to back off when the opportunity isn't quite there. That shows a special maturity for a 22-year old who wants to win.)
(In addition, image, personality and character are equally vital parts of a driver's make-up within the Formula One world, both on and off the track. That includes the demonstration of special capabilities within the team context and with sponsors. This was another solid reason why we opted for Ricardo Zonta.)
BAR may have to make the most of the Brazilian in the next couple of seasons, however, as it is believed that McLaren has retained an option the driver who has tested extensively for it this year.
