Although neither Minardi or Sarrazin's regular employer Prost blamed the young Frenchman for the incident - which saw the F1 debutant crash heavily on the start-finish straight - pictures released since show front wing damage on his car. The cause of the damage is not known, but it is unlikely that Sarrazin collided with anything or anyone prior to his retirement, leading to a suspicion of mechanical failure.


"Even in the wet, you can take that [final] turn easily," said a relieved Sarrazin, "I turned the wheel, but the car went straight on and I lost control. I thought at the time that a suspension arm may have broken, but this explanation has put my mind at rest as to my responsibility."
