Austria 'a breath of fresh air' for Gollner.

There's no doubt about it - the Austrians are mad about Formula One, as BAR-Honda's very own Austrian native can testify. Erwin Gollner is Jacques Villeneuve's personal trainer and physiotherapist and, for someone who spends a significant part of his life alongside his 'patient', there's nothing 'the Austrian Doctor' (as Jacques calls him) likes more than to get back to the fresh air and breathtaking scenery of his home in Salzburg.

"I like to walk up in the mountains in the winter time - you know when you have those things on your skis and you just walk for 4 or 5 hours. I really like outside activities."

Styria - home of the A1-Ring and the Austrian Grand Prix - is one of the prettiest regions of the country. Although currently living up to its reputation as 'the green heart of Austria', in the winter months everything turns white and everybody takes to the ski slopes. Skiing is one of Jacques' favourite pastimes and Erwin can often be seen alongside him. But that's the fun part of the rigorous fitness schedule devised by Erwin for Jacques - the rest can only be described as gruelling in the extreme. Jacques himself has often been heard to exclaim after a training schedule, 'the Austrian Doctor has been trying to kill me!'.

So exactly what is Erwin's motive? "I look after Jacques' health and fitness. I do all his training during the race weekends, during testing, after testing, between races", he states with remarkable enthusiasm. "We do a mixture of normal training and specific training using a simulator. We don't do any training during the actual race weekend because driving is tough enough, then Jacques is usually tied up with a three-day test. In between races however, we do very intensive training sessions of at least three days in order to replicate the demands of a race weekend. That way, Jacques is always prepared for the most punishing racing scenarios. However, it is during the Winter months that much of the tougher training is done in preparation from the forthcoming season."

To the rest of us, it sounds like a hard life but Erwin loves it. "I spend about 300 days with Jacques, but I've found a good rhythm, so I spend enough time at home. I've found a balance. I'm 40 so it's getting harder to keep up with the young guys. It's not that easy but I still enjoy it and it makes me proud that I can work out at the same level as the drivers."

Meanwhile, back at the Motorhome... Away from Erwin's watchful eye, a large group of lucky team guests could be found exclaiming with delight as they enjoyed a fabulous lunch courtesy of BAR-Honda's guest star chef, Mr Reinhard Gerer. The scent of top-class Austrian cuisine has been wafting down the Paddock all day, thanks to this former 'Chef of the Year' and the jewel in the crown of the Grand Hotel Bristol in Vienna. Although much more at home in the kitchens of the Hotel's renowned Restaurant Korso, Mr Gerer conjured up a feast of classical Viennese cuisine.

In between mouthfuls of glorious Asparagus with Sherry Marinade followed by Pike with Horseradish Puree, a contented former F1 driver and guest of the team, Jacques Laffite, declared the food "Absolutely delicious! Usually I don't drink wine during the day but I had to have a little glass to do the lunch justice. I certainly intend to visit Mr Gerer's restaurant next time I'm in Vienna."

The guest chef also found that he had more in common with the ex-racing star than a love of good food. He confessed that he had in fact met Laffite 20 years ago when he was just starting out in his culinary career. Gerer was selling Coca-Cola from a food stall at the old ?sterreichring and Laffite was a very special customer.

This weekend also marks the 20-year anniversary of Jacques Laffite's last race win at the Austrian Grand Prix so the BAR-Honda gourmet guest luncheon provided the perfect way of marking the occasion. Let's hope the team can add to the sense of occasion with another podium finish here at the A1-Ring.
