Lucent Technologies signs new marketing deal.

Former Jordan sponsor Lucent Technologies has inked a sales and marketing deal with networking equipment manufacturer Juniper Networks.

The agreement will allow both parties to market each other's products to major telecoms companies, and helps to fill the gap in Lucent's portfolio by providing internet-ready equipment that was lost in recent financially-induced cutbacks. Juniper, in return, has acquired Lucent's client list.

American-owned Juniper sees the deal with Lucent as another step towards introducing competition to the internet router market to challenge current pacesetter Cisco Systems, as well as taking on European and Asian market leaders Ericsson, Nokia and Siemens. According to Britain's Financial Times, Juniper recently added China Telecom, the South Korea-based KT Corporation and Sweden's Telia International to its own client list.

Although Cisco is currently reckoned to control 70 per cent of the US market, recent upturns in the amount of internet use has provided openings in the market for the likes of Juniper.
