Monaco, as even the most part-time of F1 fans will know, is a circuit lined with barriers, and there are frequently crashes on a race weekend here. Attaching a diamond to the front of the car, probably wasn't the safest place to put it, but there you go. The diamond's attachment to the Jags was all part of a deal with the Steinmetz diamond collection, and part of the Ocean's 12 film promotion. Ocean's 12 centres around an audacious diamond heist, and this appears to be exactly what's happened this weekend.

After Red Bull-backed Klien hit the barriers at the Loews hairpin, the Austrian's race was over.

"That will be the most expensive drive I'll ever take around Monte Carlo," said Klien afterwards, perhaps not realising just how much an F1 drive really does cost. The diamond, meanwhile, developed wings of its very own.

When the car was recovered to the Jaguar squad it was minus its expensive cargo. Nav Sidhu, Jaguar's charismatic head of Formula One communications, sums up the situation. "Someone here has walked away with more than a motor racing souvenir!"

And surely, in classic heist style, the robbers left Monte Carlo in a MkII Jag?

So, who are the likely suspects? Crash.net has pooled its collective crime knowledge and come up with a possible list:

Former Jaguar team bosses:List too big for publication

Rival team bosses needing money
Just where exactly were Eddie Jordan and Paul Stoddart?

Eddie Irvine
Was wanted by the British police for traffic violations. Has insider knowledge of the Jaguar team. The life of an international diamond smuggler would be well suited to the former F1 playboy.

George Clooney
Well versed in the ways of crime from his Hollywood training. On more than one occasion has been involved in diamond robberies. If he has stolen the gem, his expertise in this field will ensure it's now well out of sight.

Brad Pitt
Involved with the Clooney crime spree and surely Jen would love a new rock?

Charlie Croker
Exactly the type of crime this British criminal mastermind would be interested in.

F1 press and photographers
Unlikely that this bunch of honest and law abiding citizens would have anything to do with this...

Do you know anything about this theft? Did you see Tom Walkinshaw with a crow-bar near any F1 car wreckage? Did you steal the diamond yourself? Let us know. Your information will be displayed in the strictest of webpages.
