Seven-time Formula One world champion Michael Schumacher end an ultra-successful season with another accolade, after German television viewers voted him as the country's top sportsman of the 20th century.

Seven-time Formula One world champion Michael Schumacher end an ultra-successful season with another accolade, after German television viewers voted him as the country's top sportsman of the 20th century.

The Ferrari driver saw off challenges from two of Germany's most famous female sports stars, with Olympic canoe gold medallist Birgit Fischer taking second place and tennis star Steffi Graf third in a poll contributed to by over 100,000 people. Schumacher also beat a host of soccer names, with Franz Beckenbauer only fourth, Gerd Muller ninth and current national goalkeeper Oliver Kahn tenth.

No other motorsport participants featured at the top end of the poll, with Ralf Schumacher joining other figures from history amongst the also-rans.

War years boxer Max Schmeling, cyclist Jan Ullrich, swimmer Franziska van Almsick eighth all featured in a diverse top ten.
