Sebastian Vettel remains Ferrari’s number one priority according to team principal Mattia Binotto, but with rumours around his contract talks circling there remains a chance the Scuderia could shake-up its driver line-up for 2021.

Since securing Charles Leclerc with a new long-term deal, keeping him at Ferrari until at least the end of 2024, all eyes have been on the other spot at the team with Vettel’s current contract expiring at the end of this season.

After joining Ferrari in 2015, Vettel has spearheaded the Italian manufacturer’s Formula 1 world title charge having come close as runner-up to Lewis Hamilton in both 2017 and 2018. But following a poor 2019 season when he was outperformed by Leclerc, while also coming to blows with the Monegasque driver on occasions, the pressure has increased on the four-time F1 world champion and his place at Ferrari.

Vettel had been aiming to begin contract talks after the opening few F1 races but with the start of the 2020 season delayed he concedes he could decide his future before racing again this year.

While they remain engaged in contact negotiations, Ferrari also has a number of alternatives it could turn to if it looks for a fresh start. From experienced hand Daniel Ricciardo, emerging force Carlos Sainz or an array of young talents, the options aren’t in short supply for Ferrari.
