Ferrari Driver Academy member Giuliano Alesi will step up to the FIA Formula 2 Championship in 2019, continuing his relationship with Trident into a fourth year.

The son of ex-Ferrari F1 driver Jean Alesi, Giuliano will move into F2 next year after spending three years racing in the GP3 Series, where he has claimed four race wins.

Alesi tested for Trident in the post-season F2 test at the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi, and confirmed on Twitter on Friday he would be moving up to the category for 2019.

"It's an amazing opportunity," Alesi said. "First of all I want to thank Trident as it's going to be a pleasure to continue racing with them in F2. This is a new category, a new adventure, which I'm really looking forward to.

"This year hasn't quite gone as we all hoped, but I'm really looking forward to a successful season with Trident in 2019.

"We are going to work hard this winter, and try and come back as strong as possible for the season opener."

Alesi is the eighth driver to be confirmed on the F2 grid for 2019, with the new season kicking off in Bahrain at the end of March.
