Doohan took to the top of the timesheets in the early stages with a 2m21.953s, setting a stunning middle sector in the process.

Heavier rain meant the track worsened and drivers couldn’t improve their times.

Sectors one and three were faster at the end of the session, but with the middle part of the track remaining wetter.

Victor Martins got closest for MP Motorsport, albeit 0.7s down on Doohan’s pole time.

Doohan sits second in the drivers’ standings going into this round, over 50 points behind leader Dennis Hauger, who could only manage 14th.

Aleksandr Smolyar was a tenth behind Doohan in the lead ART Grand Prix, with Caio Collet and Logan Sargeant completing the top five.

Next up was Clement Novalak in sixth ahead of Frederik Vesti and David Schumacher.

Johnathan Hoggard was an impressive ninth in the Jenzer, while Roman Stanek rounded out the top 10.

Jak Crawford    and Lorenzo Colombo will share the front row of the grid with the latter securing reverse grid pole with 12th in qualifying.

Arthur Leclerc beat teammate Hauger to 13th on the grid, just ahead of Matteo Nannini.
